Datawindow behaves differently in painter and at runtime

I have a datawindow which switches the values between two columns at runtime, but looks fine in the datawindow painter.  The columns are Preferred and Country_Code.  In the attached file you can see that Country_Code shows N and Y at runtime, but space and 111 in the datawindow painter.  The N and Y are the values for Preferred.  I guess I can just rebuild the datawindow from scratch, but I'd like to know what's going on.  When I look at properties the names of the columns are as expected.
